Jeff, Do you know which thermostat you have in your cooling system. There are two: 1. 80*C 2. 87*C I have the 80*C installed in my Vanagon. I prefer my engine to run a little cooler. Typically at operating temperature my temp gauge hand is just below the red LED lamp. I did have an 87* thermostat installed until the thermostat "O" ring started to leak. With the 87* thermostat installed the temp gauge hand would be between the LED lamp and the HOT symbol.

I took my '84 for it's 3rd shakedown cruise yesterday, this time driving about 75 miles. I've now logged about 200 miles on it since putting in the 2.1, and like the 2 previous cruises, not a hiccup,stumble,grumble-it's running very well. Yesterday I even got hit with a couple of good crosswinds that barely moved it at highway speeds (I also have a Bay Westy, which is why I notice these things). My only issue is the temp gauge is still reading too cold, although I am getting plenty of heat front and back. My gas gauge is flaky too, reading all over the place. I stopped at a friends house to show him the Vanagon, he wasn't home, the van sat in his driveway for about 2 minutes. On restart the temp gauge was all the down and slowly climbed to about 1/4, where it usually sits. Only once have I seen it climb to just to the left of the LED. Searching the archives I see the two are most likely related, and I've got some ideas now on what to check. Jeff
