I am a grateful 40 year old. The Death Clock (deathclock.com) says I have 32 years left. Perhaps I will have a few years left to enjoy my bus after finally solving all of its electrical issues... My family owned VWs exclusively until I was about 10. My mother drove a squareback. My mother then moved on to a succession of Volvos. My father's first mid-life crisis involved a red Opal GT. His second MLC involved a 69 Westy that I loved dearly. We made that camper sleep four despite having only a single bed up top. I slept in the gear sling/crib over the front seats. While I'm sure it contributed to the demise of one of its engines, I have fond memories of my Pops and I towing a 12' daysailer and a canoe on the poptop around various Virgina campgrounds. We looked like gypsies, I'm sure. Great Westy. Another memorable VW experience was rolling a friend's father's 63 Beetle after sliding it into a ditch when I was 17. No injuires, gratefully. That was the last time my friend asked me to drive... -- mordo 1990 Carat |
