Just for the record, VW called my '76 7 passenger a "station wagon" in the sales info. My '67, which was naked inside behind the front seats (except for the chicken tax middle seat stuck in) was called a "transporter" to distinguish it from the fully finished models, so VW did use that term "transporter" in the US at least once.
