Way to go, Sam!!

Reading this list, I must be third in line for the title of "oldest List

Member", being age 68.

I can't match you on vehicle ownership. My first VW was a 63 beetle given me by my Mother as a wedding present. Then there was a ragtop beetle - I can't remember the year any more - and then a 69 beetle. Then

came a 68 Transporter, and then a '71 camper. Don't what the thing was. Had a fiberglass high top on it though. It was factory. Then came my first Vanagon - and 85 GL, and later an 88 GL. I still have it and use it. Most recently I added a second 88 GL as a project vehicle.

I have owned others - first car was a 1953 Studebaker Commander. Sweet! There were three Volvos, two pickup trucks, Jeep Cherokee widetrac, and a Jeep Grand Wagoneer LTD - wide track.

The sweetest of all was a sports car I owned. - a powder blue 1972 Jaguar XKE Convertible, V-12 engine, Quad carbs, bumps on the hood. Closest thing in the world to flying a fighter plane --- on the ground! Don't know why I never got ticketed in that thing. Had a few favorite interstate and expressway interchanges where I would give her a workout.

Fabulous performance. Would still have that car, but the economy went sour in the late 70's and I had to let it go. Sure made me sad.. But it was fun while I had it.

Best,

John Rodgers 88 GL Driver

I may also have the distinction of having owned the most VW cars. My first was a '57 Beetle convertible which I bought in 1959 fo $1195, about half the price of a new one at that time. Since then I have owned many, including Golfs, a GTI, two bread loaf Westys, and two Vanagon GLs which includes my '91 GL. Due to sentimental history, I courted my wife in the '57, I have made it a practice to always own at least one VW. I have also owned numerous memorable other vehicles, my favorite being a '49 Chrysler Windsor convertible that I sold for, not always too smart, $150.00 ! I've owned twelve British cars, mostly Triumphs with an occasional MG or Healey, three Rambler Americans, two Mercedes, one BMW, several Audi, including my present Quattro, five Saabs, which included two three cylinder two strokes, neat > and smooth as can be, numerous Ford or Chevy products, two Cadillacs and one Ford pick up. When I lived in England I owned a Standard Pennant, look that one up ! Needless to say both my mechanic and my insurance agent smile broadly when they see me drive up. > > I must add that I enjoy reading posts to the list but do very little of the mechanical work myself except for the occasional oil change. The information is invaluable and allows me to sound knowledgeable when a repair is in order. Nothing makes a mechanic, excuse me, an auto technician, happier than the customer who starts by saying, " it is making a funny sound " ( there stands my boat payment ! ) > > O.K.
