Same here in the states. It is usually called a mechanics and materialmen's lien. Difficult to enforce and each state has very specific time and noitice requirements to file the lien. Historically, they were much abused and thus have undergone a lot of revision.

They are most often employed in the construction business but I'm sure they could be used by auto mechanics as well.
