Both my '84 and my '85 have only the plastic filter between the tank and the pump. Some later models came with both filters but, for some reason, dealerships were directed to remove the pre-pump filters during routine maintenance. It's typical to find only the after pump filter on 2.1 machines.

Of course, there are variations often depending on what POs did.
