If you do have a filter after the pump, make absolutely sure it's of the metal variety.

The P.O. on my last Vanagon had installed a little square plastic one, after the pump, which burst at the seams from the pressure and sent said pressurized gasoline shooting out everywhere underneath while I was at a stoplight with my wife and new baby daughter riding along.

Thank goodness the girl next to me rolled down her window and said, "hey, uh, there's something shooting out from underneath your van and it smells like gas!!

Thankfully I was able to pull over, get them out of the car, and get a pan under there. Nothing caught on fire..
