Roger,

Do you d this on the inside or outside of the car? Are you saying that you remove the old rubber and reuse it? I missed the original to this post but have been wondering about this.

I knew a guy back in the 80s who used a technique similar to yours to restore Porsche rubber. He would coat the items in silicone, wrap them in plastic wrap, and keep them for months or years while he rebuilt the car. Worked really well. The vaseline is a lot easier to come by. Wonder if mineral oil might not penetrate better?
