I'll second what Benny's doing as for the past 10 years I have been running
the 1.9 cooling system and the Digijet FI with no problems out of the
ordinary to report. I recently upgraded to the European 2.1 Digijet ECU
(thanks to Boston Bob!) and roadtested it with a trip to Buses By The
Bridge/Lake Havasu from Ventura with a marked improvement in power and
throttle response, especially in relation to hill climbing. This is with a
fully loaded Westy with a loaded trailer tagging behind. As as I can tell,
there's negligible effect to mileage (if any). It's nice to only have the
accelerator pedal a third to almost half-way depressed, verses two thirds
depressed for most driving.
I agree with Benny that the 1.9 cooling system is much easier to maintain,
bleed and the omission of the oil cooler is fine. When I did my upgrade 10
years ago, I just could not justify the cost(s) to upgrade to the
2.1cooling system, exhaust and Digifant. In retrospect, I'm very glad
I
didn't. 1.9 stuff is less expensive to replace/maintain, although some
pieces are just now becoming hard-to-find (HTF), so drawing on my experience
in owning vintage vws, I have a rather substantial spare parts stash I'm
adding to all the time. Because Westfalias are climbing in the demand and
price brackets, I plan to never, ever sell mine, because I could never
afford to replace it with an a equivalent!
