Hi, Bob,
One of my daughters is leaving for Africa too: to Ghana with SIT. I am
in the foreign study business, and I still worry when my own kids go off
for sojourns abroad.

Don't be terrified, Bob, she'll be fine. She's a sensible girl. She
might
feel a bit out of place, or perhaps somewhat harassed in the street if
she
looks very green (which she will), but she'll be okay.
It might be life-changing. Or it might not. But whatever happens will
be
good - part of growing up for her, and maybe even for you and your wife.
However your daughter grows up she will move into a world that is
different
from yours. Senegal might seem much more different. But you know, it's
a
bit like my experience in the vanagon community. Many of you guys are
very
different from the folks I meet at work, or living in DC, and on this
list
we're all quite different from each other. But people are people, if
you
treat them well they will reciprocate. So Sam will have an interesting
experience and her view of the world will change and she will grow.
Joy
