I agree, I hav an oil cooler on my '88. its the square box above the oil filter. My question would be:
If the oil cooler were not there, the threaded tube that the oil filter screws on to would be too long. So how would you get the oil filter on?
Donna is correct, on my '88 the nut holding the oil cooler to the blook gradually loosened over time (a good thing to check when you change the oil) and eventually the seal between the block and oil-cooler got distorted and started leaking.
Since the oil cooler has two small radiator hoses going to it, it is a PITA to remove to change the seal.
Also of note - doesn't is serve as an opil wamer as well? The warm radiator water would tend to help bring the van to operating temp in cooler climates.
