They're not illegal, as far as I know.

We (in Sandy Eggo) have had a coupla' gas stations and one propane
retailer refuse to fill ours.  One of the gas station guys said he
simply didn't know how to deal wth the old valve.  I suspect that was
the reasons for the other refusals, too.

Then we found Farrellgas.  Not only did they know how to cope with the
old valve ... but they still have replacement valves!  They replaced
the valve on our propane tank.
