Two long stories short:

In my youth two guys took my skis out of my car in my driveway at three in the morning. My brother woke me, I gave him my unloaded shotgun (I know, stupid) and we got in my car. We tracked down the car they were driving in, pulled along side, pointed the shotgun at them. They pulled over so quickly that we overshot them and had to put the car in reverse to get back to them. They gave the skis back, no problem.

Another time I was hiking off trail alone in some local hills, two hunting dogs showed up out of nowhere to be followed by an old guy with a long beard. He pointed a stainless steel six shooter at me, it looked like a .357. He said "I have a mind to shoot you where you stand". He didn't though - he just escorted me out of the area for a mile or two. For whatever reason I was never really scared or worried. He must have been growing something nearby. I asked my police friend what to do, he said "don't go back there again". I followed his advice.

Markus (really, I'm non-violent) with The Girl ('87 Westy).
