Mike,

Using a BFH ( in this case BFCL) for the task is never  the solution.
That is  a simple mechanical lock mechanism. First, squirt it good with
carb cleaner. Then, stand with your left foot off the ground, chew a wad
of Redmans in your left cheek, and then pinch the hell out of the
connection with your fingers, and pull. It may require repeating a
couple of times. I never had one yet require severe mechanical
manipulation as  in having to reef on it hard to get it to move. The
connector is too simple. Other things - yes - but not this. To do so
will almost guarantee breaking something, and breaking something on a
Vanagon is not good  - read expensive!
