I have found later model ('68-up) Buses to have much better snow traction than 2wd Vanagons. The Bus was more rear-heavy, whereas with the Vanagon Volkswagen attempted to equalize the weight distribution front to rear (hence the front-mounted spare tire). My guess is that the Bus' better snow traction is because a higher percentage of its weight is over the drive wheels. Of course the tire also makes a big difference. A snow tire is best, of course, as there is quite a bit of variation among so-called all-season tires. Also, a thinner tire will tend to have better snow traction than a wider one, all things being equal.
