I've always heard that the magnetic type compasses were not accurate inside of most vehicles due to all of the metal in the structure of the vehicle. Seems that there are quite a few varieties for sale in most FLAPS though. Has anyone ever checked the accuracy of these type inside a vehicle vs. taking the same compass outside of the vehicle? I have a simple hiking type with a floating needle that I keep in my Westy and may experiment to see if there are any differences in the readings. Has anyone ever tested any of the types like the one available at Target against a magnetic type? Maybe with all of the satellite navigation devices available today most folks probably have little or no use for the older magnetic type compass. I would like to have a navigation system (love gismo's and other electronic dodads in the Westy)but it just isn't in the budget. Sometimes its helpful to be oriented just to North/South etc.
