Maybe we are looking at a "low fuel pressure and/or flow" problem. It is a possibility, with a good chance at a mostly plugged filter, after all. The symptoms would fit. When greater demands are made on the actual delivery of fuel, there just ain't none left. A fuel flow check, not just a straight pressure check, would be needed to find this one. The cure is already on the way, though, sounds like!

Another, more remote possibility is a misbehaving distributor. The advance system may not be advancing. This can be easily checked with a timing light. If the timing advances with increasing RPM, then it shouldn't be this. Give all the vaccuum hoses that attatch to the distributor a looking over. Are they connected? Are they even there? If a 2.1 was transplanted in, I would CAREFULLY go over all the vaccuum hoses for presence and correct routing. One side of the standard 1.9 l distributor needs "ported" vaccuum, while the other needs "manifold" vaccuum. I cannot remember which side of the distributor controls the advance, but one of the sides should be connected to the same vaccuum as the fuel pressure regulator. Which is also a source for this sort of problem, but not as likely.

The throttle position switch should not be the cause at all. That switch is only in play at idle, and at Wide Open Throttle. Neither of those conditions are the case here.

I am having an issue with my 85 Westy with a 2.1 wbx and digijet fi. The idle is fine and power is good below about 3000 to 3200 rpms. Once I hit 3000 or 3200 rpms I lose power. This is most pronounced in third and fourth gears and goiing up hills. The timing seems ok; it is set at +/- 3 degrees btdc. I am pretty sure the ecu is good. I guess I can start by fine tuning the timing. It has new plugs, air filter, recent oil change and new filter. The fuel pump has been getting louder recently (last 3 months or so); I just ordered a new one and fuel filter (metal cannister type) for Van-Cafe and will install it when it arrives. Could this be a problem with the throttle body switch? I put in a new throttle body switch about six months ago. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Sam
