After a long and valiant fight against prostate cancer, longtime Listmember Chuck Hill died this past Friday. For many months as the disease progressed, he had been receiving home care at the family farm near Dysart, IA through the local hospice program. Besides his numerous local activities, Chuck has been reknowned in the VW community for his encyclopedic knowledge of Vanagons and his willingness to share it with everyone. His collection of dozens of Vanagons and other vehicles has caused more than one visiting VW enthusiast to wonder, "Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa." Chuck and his wife, Barb, were frequent participants at many VW camping activities and developed a wide circle of friends, many of whom were welcomed to stay at their home whenever they were in the vicinity. Chuck was a witty and thoughtful conversationalist who generally had something appropriate to say on topics as diverse as politics, cuisine, and mechanics. As one whose time came way too soon, he will be missed by all who had the good fortune to meet him. |
