Thanks Greg! As a Vancouver Islander, I can appreciate the pain it can sometimes be to find "White Gas". I now buy it at Walmart for cheap, and put it in my 3 gallon gas can marked "White Gas". It seems to keep, I've had one can for 8 yrs, and it still fires up and runs great. Think I'll pass on the unleaded gas trick then.
I wonder if the purpose built ones smell bad when they run unleaded??

Back in 1980 our family took a trip to Vancouver Island and once there discovered we couldn't get white gas. Since we were planning on staying a couple of days, we had to make do with unleaded.
Regular gasoline will work in a coleman "white gas" stove or lantern, but it has some drawbacks:
1. The stuff smells AWFUL. Your cooking area soon has an aroma identical to the tailpipe of a car tuned far too rich. Don't even THINK about using one of those over-the-burner toasters.
2. It leaves a nasty smelling layer of black soot on your cookware, which takes a lot of soap and elbow grease to remove.
In an emergency it will definitely work without major issues, but if it's just an economic measure I would pay the extra; I prefer to enjoy my time in the woods well away from such smells. (Unless of course they're being made by my trail-bike or outboard motor.)
