I don't know if you have the idle test or the IM240, (dyno), but in general,
the states emission limits are at least above the upper end of the max
limits for vehicles of a certain year or range of years. Everything 81 and
later has controls for mixture,(CO, the O2 sensor, Cat), NOX, ( O2 sensor
and catalyst) and HC, (Cat, fuel vapor recovery, closed crankcase vent). If
all is running well, all these number should be close to "0". If you failed,
you are probably creating 5-10 times the pollution/mile you should be. The
term is gross polluter and that is what emissions programs are all about.
Most likely there is a waiver program that if you can't make it pass after
certain repairs and some dollar amount, you get waived for some time period.
As for making it pass by tweaking the AFM, that was really tampering. If the
O2 sensor is doing its job, the mixture should be spot on by that. If not,
something is wrong and proper diagnoses are the key. Give us the numbers and

Yup your right i was going to post my numbers and will soon, but last time
they tweeked my AFM to get it to pass and charged me 80 bucks, sure i
replaced
some parts common stuff that goes bad, just getting robbed every year
because i don't
drive the newest stuff and its an older car..
bottom line is they will do whatever is needed to keep the older cars off
the road so you
have to buy the latest and greatest.. i feel.
