the "grinding" noise you hear is your brass contact ring getting destroyed.
so fix it asap.    the main cause of this is failure to tighten down the
little flathead screws that hold your turn/wiper stalk assy down..  they come in
contact w/ the brass contact ring on the steering wheel, and grind away at it..
before too long you'll have a hole in it.
