Hi Nathan.
Last summer I removed what was left of the stock heater (and gas
heater) in my van. For starters the heater box flaps were siezed and
totally rusted, so investing $ in restoring the stock heater was not
in the stars for me. (soon will be the engine swap too) Gas heater
wasn't known to be working either. Plus at a somewhat untrusting
ignorant level, my mind-set is still in the 40 HP air cooled engine
(doghouse) setup, which was known to introduce, at the very least,
fumes from oil burning off the engine case. No matter how good the
heater boxes/gaskets etc. were. I do understand though that the 2L is
a different heater design though.
Regardless, this is all just a hypothetical thought/idea for providing
heat while driving.
FWIW, the 79 van had a blower in the engine bay. Not sure if it was
there to move air for heat or defrost. Not sure if other years of vans
had this.
