I do appreciate that Baltimore is not really cold in comparison. But, for
us, 5F this morning is damned cold. Particularly in consideration of the
fact that three weeks ago, I was sailing in Baltimore harbor on a sunny, 70F
day.
I was recently admiring a coolant heater that TerryK offers in the Samba
classifieds. That seems like it would be essential gear in the frozen north
of Canadia.
I saw a program about the coldest inhabited place on earth, somewhere in
Siberia. The expedition vehicles had to start in temps that reach -70F at
night. The resourceful and daring drivers simplpy built fires under the
engines to liquify the oil in the crankcase.
Keep that exposed skin to a minimum!

It got down to 7F in Balto this morning. I was anticipating that the bus
would not like to be awakened. The starter cranks just fine but
upon firing,
something is making a distinctive noise of complaint.
It sounds sort of like "whoooeeeuuszz." It has twice done this and sound
quiets down when I drive away slowly and gently, eventually disappearing
when the engine reaches operating temperature.
Anything to be concerned with or just the normeal sound of an old, cold
engine?
My heating oil ran out overnight as well. The house was 46F inside. So much
for "automatic delivery." To the oil company's credit, they arrived within
an hour of my call and came in and bled the air and primed the pump.
You think you have problems. It was down to -45C overnight here. Rita is
just about to go start the CARAT to leave for her work. We'll see in a bit
how that goes.
Cheers,
