How about replacing that bar that crosses from one side to the other with a custom shaped one that has a rectangularized U in it, so that most of the "crossing" part is moved forward or back? Could that get it out of your way? Could it also add leverage to help raise/lower the top? I went and looked at my snowed-in Westy and tried to imagine, but I am one-armed and will be for five more weeks, so can't experiment or visualize while raising or lowering the top, so I'll just put this idea out....
