The pioneers of yore lived in a world with very few people. If they soiled the space around them with waste or depleted the fish by harvesting all they wanted, they could just move down the river and find more and let the first place recover through nature. There's too many of us for that now. You wanna be the one to leave so others can live as the pioneers did? No, I thought not. So the only way to go is to share and not leave any mess, so the next person will be able to stay there and enjoy the fish when you've moved on. Unfortunately, that means rules. Otherwise you won't have anything to enjoy at all, because the person before you will have messed it all up.
