Leatherman tool is the first thing (a good knife is a substitute). I can turn in a reasonable McGuyver with a knife. Gloves are (for me) a nice 2nd addition as my tender fingers tend to get blisters when I use the leatherman a lot...

Food. My Westy (normally) keeps a few dry goods stored so that I'm ready for emergency camping. Unfortunately some mouse (or is that louse) discovered some of my dry goods (oatmeal). I think the mouse corpse in the driveway is the culprit. I cultivate snakes. They are good at hunting mice.....My dry goods are Ramen Noodles, Black Beans and Rice soup. Water can be found many places, and if boiled is (usually) safe to consume. I've also got tea, but my first choice (green) doesn't taste particularly good if the water has a strong aroma (chlorine and iron will both have strong affect on drinking water.)

Wool blankets are in my emergency stash. Even wet they'll help. I prefer my down comforter, but if it ever gets wet, it will be worse then useless.

Bleach. A small container is in my store for emergencies. It can help disinfect water for drinking purposes, and is useful for cleaning too.

TP. Toilet Paper. Two rolls of Scott's TP. You can make do with other materials, but TP can double as Kleenex and bandages in a pinch.

Backpack. A light foldable one. That way I can stick the blanket and other stuff in it and carry them, while leaving my hands free.

In an emergency I'd prefer to have my boots, but I don't consider them in the same league as the above.
