To prevent abuse, the wiki could be editable by registered users only -- the smart guys, (we know who they are) -- but readable by anyone. A wiki document is a "live" document. The writer of the original article may have overlooked something because, say, he wrote an article about how to attach a cruise control's cable to the throttle body, and because his Vanagon has a manual transmission, the linkage bits on this throttle body are different than those on a manual tranny Vanagon which, as I've found, makes a big difference. I could easily added the extended information. Of course, I'd need to get approved as one of the smart guys allowed to change the wiki's article, but I'm fairly certain that a few dollars in the right pockets would take care of that. I could write my own article about solar rigs, based on my setup which works really well for me, and guys like Dennis Haynes could erase everything I wrote and put in actually accurate information. The point is, it's "live"!

My guess is that if someone had the know-how, the time, and the server space* to set up a wiki, the darn thing would take off and within a couple of years it would not only be a repository of much of the combined wisdom of the guys and gals on this list, but newbies would quickly find the info they wanted. Here's how it could work: If a newbie pops up with a question that hasn't yet been added to the wiki, it would be added by someone who has all the answer in his hand withing a day or so.

And tires. Think about a "live" document for friggin' tires! Tires get added, folks describe their experiences, the thing grows and hey presto! we know what tires work and what don't.

*NB: I have a couple of hosted accounts I use for some businesses I run -- I'd cheerfully pay the hosting company a few more bucks a month to provide the space for this endeavor.

-- Mike "Rocket J Squirrel" Elliott 71 Type 2: the Wonderbus 84 Westfalia: Mellow Yellow ("The Electrical Banana") 74 Utility Trailer. Wiki puts the power to moderate and add info into the user's hands instead of a central moderator, which helps to eliminate bias.
