FreeBSD has been one of the most reliable OS I've tried. It is not Linux, but is UNIX. Not really much of a difference, but the lineage is somewhat different. It does take _some_ reading :) in order to get comfortable with. If you want Linux, I agree that Ubuntu is very good. It is Debian based (one of my favourite distros), but much easier to set up and maintain. Best of luck with your choice. The best part is you can download as many as you like, and try them all out.
