Thanks to all who replied to this. Sorry I missed most of the active conversation as I wasn't able to connect all weekend.

As far as Route 66 goes we certainly know it will have its fair share of "depressing" sights. I also know that there are many parts that just don't exist anymore. To make it more confusing i see that there were actually several "alternate" routes as parts of the highway were moved throughout its existance.

That being said I have been reading up (book and web) and I think there is enough there (operational or not) that it would be worth the trip. There seems to be a Route 66 preservation group in each of the eight states and a mess of maps and guides for fairly decent prices from each.

As far as "Cars" goes - well yes that was a pretty deep running topic in that movie. That wasn't our inspiration but I have read that the movie has infused its fair share of new interest in the "Mother Road".

Someone mentioned a book called "Road Trip USA" or something close tot hat. I saw that at the book store the other day. It looks like a great find. I had planned on getting it and with your rave review I will be sure to do that.

Well, thanks again for the posts. We certainly wouldn't be going any time soon so I have a lot of time to research and plan.
