I now use Castrol 5W50 in my '85 Westy and have had no issues with it for the last two years.

When it's cold the engine "Thinks" it has 5 weight in it and after the engine warms up it "Thinks" it has 50 weight in it.

The 5W50 allows cold weather starts such as in the -0º F temperatures we have in northern Maine and it also offers the necessary higher viscosity for extended freeway travel. Remember, with a functioning thermostat, the engine, when warmed up, won't know if it's summer or winter.
