And as one who used Jim's guide to do this conversion just a few months ago, I'd like to say what an excellent resource it is. Follow it and you won't have a problem. And you will most likely be very happy with the 2.1. My '84 hauls (OK, by VW bus standards) a**. Really, it runs so well it has me scared! I've driven mostly Bays, and a few years ago I had another '84 (1.9, automatic) and the power difference is incredible. Side note, I finally this past weekend opened up the seized 1.9 that was in my '84 Westy when I bought it. Thanks to those who pointed out the 4 nuts inside the water jacket, that WAS what was keeping the case from splitting apart. Now, this engine was locked up solid, the VW shop where the PO had it towed couldn't get it budge, and I couldn't either, using a 3' breaker bar. The bearings don't look that bad-I expected them to be pretty much gone. There are a lot of metal flakes inside the case, and the two inner cam lobes are flat on top. Pistons, rods, all "seem" to be OK and the cylinders still have a very visible cross hatch pattern. Anyway, a big THANKS to Jim Thompson for putting together his guide for doing the conversion to a 2.1! Jeff
