Subject: 1984 Westy Cooling System Mysteries

Ahhhh ... Westy 9.1 cooling system.

The other day, while driving east/south on I-89 with outdoor temps at -5 and a heavy wind, the overheated engine light and gauges lit and moved up alarmingly and sporatically. For example 4 days before, I had driven from Eastern Maine to Western Vermont and the temp increase happened once for about 10 seconds during the entire trip.

There is no evidence of leaks in the ice and snow-covered driveways where I park. The vehicle has a new thermostat, the coolant flows, the heaters front and back blow acceptable heat (not excessive, but I can live with what I get), the front, external radiator cooling fan works, and all fluid wells appear to be working properly. The systems has been bled, and re-filled.

This is not a new problem, has been going on for several months and several vw-seasoned mechanics have tried to figure our and correct the problem.

HELP?
