Maybe not 'any oil or grease' is good in this case. While a lot of the
rubber on our car can withstand oil, I don't see a reason why they would
have designed the rubber oil proof on the gas tank. Gas proof yes.
I use WD40 that is not oily but lets things slide until it evaporates, which
is a long time.
I would not like to see the rubber disintegrate after a year of the change.
One can use Silicon too, I guess.
