The average "yank", as you put it, drinks beer too cold because they have to mask the taste of the mass produced commercial crap that we collectively call popular American beer. There are exceptions - and as many of us know fine examples of good beer in the Microbrwed variety. Most of that Macro/Commercially made stuff is really bad though.
