Hi Nathan,

A couple of years back a local scrapyard had a skidload of golf-cart batteries for $20 each. My VW friends and I bought a bunch of these and got lots of use out of them; they were slightly smaller than a group 41 battery and had bolt-on terminals rather than posts.

If there's a supplier for electric golf-carts or forklifts around it might be worth asking for a price quote.
