Hi Brian,

Don't blame the starter just yet. Check ALL your wiring connections, from battery to starter to the ground strap from tranny-chassis and chassis to ground. Also check the wiring from the ignition switch to the solenoid.

Colleen had a no-start on our Vanagon on Thursday; it wouldn't go with a boost either. I climbed underneath and hit the starter with a mallet while my brother turned the key; still no love.

BUT.... As soon as I touched the solenoid wiring, the engine lit up immediately. It's been driven extensively since and hasn't repeated the no-start even once.
