It's a 1.4 DOHC 75hp all-aluminum Golf engine (made for the international market). I had the same engine in my 2001 Seat Leon. It's really good.

I've talked to a few of the owners/drivers who all said they were legally (can you imagine that?) up from south of the border visiting relatives a few times a year. As long as they had the proper paperwork at the border they were able drive 'em in as long as they drove 'em back out when leaving. It's strange hearing the quiet exhaust note of a Golf/Jetta coming from the tail end of a Bay Window ;-)
