Speaking of the moderator, why don't you let him do his job? If he has a problem with this thread he'll address it. As was pointed out, many of us have these devices, many specifically for our vans and the outcome of this issue is a relevant concern. Futhermore, the subject is well within topic both by rule and long-standing convention. If you fancy yourself some kind of strict constuctionist perhaps you should start a 'tech only' vanagon group and moderate it the way you like. FYI, it's been done a few times before and it hasn't worked- nobody went for it. The people on this list generally take the time to set it up on there end in the way that suits them- they establish filters, block the senders they don't care for and use the 'delete' button. The fact that we rarely ever get these kinds of rants means that for the list population in general we have established a kind of equilibrium with which the majority can live and which they accept. For example, in Outlook Express you can kill all messages in a thread, as long as the subject line doesn't change, with two clicks. You have to take two minutes to set it up to do it. Then if you see a thread you don't care to follow you can ignore it and that's it. I'd bet other common email progs have comparable functions. I suggest you take care of your issues on your end instead of telling the almost one thousand of the rest of us how we should do it your way.

Robert

Holly crap, all I was asking is that adults police themselves and keep a "vanagon mailing list" related to vanagons, adherent to the rules set forth by the moderator. I don't read this list to monitor the daily goings-on in the world, i.e.: Bill gates, monopolies, buy-outs and such. Why is it unreasonable of me to not want to sift through such posts to share actual vanagon information with others? Two factions? Maybe the "faction" of this group that wants to converse about news issues and such and can't at least wait until Fri. or tag their post as off topic should start there own group and moderate the way they like.

Dan,

I see your point and I'm not looking to argue. I think that differen't people are on this list for different reasons. It appears there are two factions here - those who want posts only re: mechanical, parts, etc. type posts and then there are those who use this list for those reasons as well as an online community of sorts.

I certainly respect your point of view. Keeping that in mind though I have to say that I think others, myself included, feel just as strongly about posts others might feel are off topic because those posts are useful too. Sometimes more useful than posts that you might feel more appropriate.

I'm not saying I am right but that is my point of view on the topic.
