If you can't get a good set off the list, go to the dealer and ask for front brake pad shims. though I haven't had to deal with it on the VW, they were missing from my wife's car and something--maybe them being missing--caused no end of thunk thunk thunk to the point I had to order the shims AND replace the caliper and pads.

Better now than when things are even more screwed up.
