How many of you (like me) ran out and checked to make sure the fridge was in the "off" position after reading this post?

I totally agree and I can say this from experience.

I'm currently using the old fridge relay as an aux battery charging relay.

My aux battery is wired so that the fridge can run on DC even with the engine off. I made the mistake of leaving the fridge switch in the 12v position overnight which completely wasted the aux battery. That sucker was DEAD and wouldn't even take a charge. I drove home with it that way (several hundred miles) and anything hooked to the aux battery worked fine with the engine running ... but not once I turned off the key. That bad aux battery didn't affect the starting battery one iota.
