It hasn't been approved by the FCC yet, and it is against current FCC rules, which only allow the existence of satellite radio if there are at least two companies. Apparently it may be possible for the FCC to change the rules to allow it, but that hasn't happened yet, and it's not at all clear that it will.

So right now this is just a scheme on the part of XM and Sirius to eliminate duplication, reduce competition and presumably, down the road, increase prices.

I don't have satellite radio and am not interested in getting it - but you learn everything if you listen to NPR! Except how to fix your van, of course. (vanagon content...)
