This works on Oriental carpets. I don't know if this works with our carpets but I guess baring a non permeable backing it should.

When you've vacuumed it etc on the top turn it over and use a beater vacuum on the back side. You'll be amazed at the dirt that comes out.

This dirt doesn't come out with washing either. You can verify that by doing it after you wash it if you want to.
