Maybe I don't understand the problem...

A Vanagon fits anywhere, goes anywhere and has the floorplan you're looking for. Adding a camping trailer makes the vehicle too long and slow. Going with a car + trailer makes it faster, but it still doesn't fit many places. Security? If I'm camping anyplace where a tent will get broken into, I'm camping in the wrong place.

If this is all true, then why ditch the westy?

So, a couple (obviously biased) thoughts: - get a side tent. Set up, then drive away. - maybe a small trailer (like Greg mentioned) for all that "other" stuff. - perhaps, tow a small golf cart? There are several road-legal one running around me near the beach. They look like a Vanagon could tow them on a small trailer - get a bike, or motocycle / scooter (my personal preference).

The Vanagon is hard to beat for it's utility and charm. For the cost of a newer rig, a Vanagon can be made very, very reliable. The engine seems to be the weakest point so put in a subie, diesel, I4 or Boston Bob. Take care of the "forgotten" maintenance items and off you go. And probably for less than a new rig costs. Maybe much less.

Forever confused,

john
