Not strong enough? It's under the same pressure whether being used to feed a heater core or a transmission heat exchanger. VW considered the sad hose they used for the heater to be adequate to run 12+ feet under the van, exposed. 5/8" diameter heater hose is a perfect fit, actually. Personally, I replaced the plastic tees in the heater circuit with 5/8" epoxy coated steel ones and put the ATF heat exchanger in the circuit in place of the rear heater core (and subsequently saved much money buying the manual tranny engine hose kit). While I was under there I went ahead and replaced all the heater circuit lines with triple layer reinforced 5/8" heater hose. The factory heater lines are, at two layers and strung out that far, too soft for my comfort when three-layer cut resistant hose is out there. The only annoying bit is that the OUTSIDE diameter is larger and it's a little too tight to fit the spring clamps over without tediously trimming back the stop tab on the clamps with a Dremel. You can usually find a 50' box of the stuff pretty cheap (i.e. around $40, as I recall).
