Hi Pat, Don't forget to consider a Subaru transplant...hundreds of Vanagons have been converted to Subaru power. Subaru engines are the closest to the factory engine form factor (flat 4, water boxer design), although a much improved design IMHO.....and unlike a diesel, almost no vibration and noise (most Vanaru owners have to look at the tach at stoplights to see if the engine is running).

Is there anyone in Seattle area with a Subaru powered van who can offer Pat a thrill ride?

General Subaru engine information (white paper) here: http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/files/SAE_boxer.pdf

Tons of information is available here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/subaruvanagon/

Small Car in Tacoma installs turn-key Subaru's http://www.smallcar.com/convert.htm

You can also get a turn-key system shipped on a pallet to your regular mechanic (or DIY) from http://www.vanaru.com/

I'm obviously biased towards Subaru, but look and drive at as many conversion options before getting out your wallet...$7-$10k is lot of money.
