I can't say i have any racing experience, per se, but
these are vanagons, so i hope that isn't a
requirement.
I would agree with what you are saying if vanagons
were anywhere near locking up tires (i personally own
the worst braking vanagon - the early model westy).
However, since the majoirity of them aren't near that
threashold on dry pavement, additional braking power
(just before the point of locking up) can only reduce
your stopping power.
If you frequently find yourself in very slippery
conditions, then you need to think about brake balance
more. Then again, stock brakes would be sufficient.
Having said all that, a balanced brake system is
obviously a good thing. There are equations out there
in the web if you want to calculate a starting point,
or at least educate yourself on the dynamics and
relationsips of braking.
