The brake shoes are attached to the brake backing plate. They are readily available, for a price at the dealer and some on line vendors. It often needs to be replaced due to bending or corrosion. Using a screwdriver to pry the drum off is the usual cause of bending. Once bent, the sympton is it become difficult to get a firm brake pedal as the shoes are not positioned straight against the drum. and as the cylinder move out, the shoes have to twist slightly taking up some pedal action.
