RE: Insurance settlement The one thing I would look out for is making sure that whatever shop you take it to is will to work with the insurance company that will be paying the bill. Ask them outright are they willing to take a job that will be paid for by State Farm. Not all shops that the insurance company will work with are on their list. Second, and just my personal position, I'd tell the adjuster in no uncertain terms that the damage to the rear was caused by the accident and they either accept that and fix it or go to the authorities and file a complaint against you for attempted insurance fraud. BTW, I just went through the same process with Safeco over a guy that hit me (my T-Bird, not my Vanagon) during the ice in December. Less damage, around $1,000 and I went with a local shop on the Safeco list. They did as good a job as I expected with no problems.
