Probably not as most clients are configured to put the '>' in to indicate quoted material from the message being responded to.

It's a global setting and if you change it it's changed for every mail you write.

Hadn't heard of this and am not sure of the point.

the '>' is accepted to designate quotes of the message being replied to.

It helps you know who's speaking when a message is a response.

I do object when responders quote entire lengthy messages when they are only responding to a small bit but some indicator is necessary....
