Anything can be made to fit anything depending on how much time and money you have. The position of the steering wheel relative to the where the driver's lap would be is the limiting factor. In other words, the seat bottom has to be relatively flat so the drivver can still slide out of the seat.

I've had Toyota seats in Vanagons and Honda seats in Type 3 Notchbacks. My Mercedes 280TE had Recaro seats from an Audi TT. The Recaros having the typical flat bottoms were easily adaptable.

Get a hacksaw and a welder and you can put a good number of different seats in a Vanagon. There's plenty of examples IN the archives. Vanagons are a different animal compared to BOATS such as a 1971 El Dorado. So just because it works for a Vanagon, it doesn't mean it will fit everything. Choose your seat carefully. The wrong one can be a royal PITA.
